Sir William Wallace ("Braveheart"), the Scottish patriot, was born in 1272. Scourge of the English in battle, he was eventually defeated by Edward I at Falkirk in 1298. However, he was not captured until 1308, when he was tried for treason in the Great Hall at Westminster, condemned and executed the same day at West Smithfield.
