Lot Essay

From early childhood, Diego Giacometti would model in plaster the foxes, stags and deer that he saw in the Grisons mountains, near Stampa where he grew up. He would give life to all sort of figures, everyday animals, dogs and cats or birds on windowsills. Captured in plaster, he places them on his chandeliers, hidden as if on the branches of trees or as figures in decorative schemes he called Paysages. These works, while often serving a practical function as perhaps a bannister or a windowsill, immerse us in Diego's world of dreams and poetry.

The French postal service will issue a set of postage stamps dedicated to French artists. The image of Grand paysage 'La promenade des amis' has been chosen as a design to represent Diego Giacometti's oeuvre.
