A Victorian mahogany English domestic medicine chest,
with a plaque on the interior for Savory & Moore - Chemists to the Queen - 143, New Bond Street, and 220, Regent St LONDON , of trunk-type with one drawer, the upper layer with red velvet-lining and ruched in the lid, compartmentalised to house twenty-four bottles (three missing) and a glass pill tile, the bottles with paper content labels on the shoulders and a label beneath for chemists Savory & Moore or Duncan, Flockhart & Co. (four without labels), all with facet-cut stoppers and some chamois covers tied with twine; the drawer beneath with a retaining rod and red velvet lining, compartmentalised to house four glass pots with silver tops, six small bottles (one missing) with paper content labels, facet-cut stoppers of which three have chamois covers tied with twine, a glass measure graduated for two fluid ounces, a glass mortar and pestle, two larger bottles with paper content labels and facet-cut stopper, one with a chamois cover tied with twine; and a nesting tray holding a hand-held balance with copper pans, a spatula for mixing pills and two small round fruitwood 'pill boxes' with Savory & Moore paper labels for drachm weights and grain weight, the compartment below the nesting tray containing a syringe in a maroon red leatherette-covered cylindrical case, a smaller glass instrument in a similar case labeled CAUSTIC on the base and a glass TOOTH-ACHE PENCIL, also a package labelled in manuscript For Serpents bites etc - Beans to be scraped and moistened and put upon the bite - Dr Bence Jones , with an accompanying letter to Lord [?]Ofneston dated 30 June 1815 and the paper it was sealed in; the exterior of the case with three inlaid military-style drawer pulls -- 30.5 x 21.5 x 21.5cm. (12 x 8½ x 8½in.)
