CELLAR REMNANTS FROM NEW YORK'S FAMED RESTAURANT, LA CARAVELLE
Recently removed by NYWines and Christie's staff from the professional storage conditions of the famed restaurant
On May 22, 2004, one of the country's most treasured restaurant jewels served its last meal. For more than 43 years, Manhattan's La Caravelle was considered by both critics and connoisseurs alike to be one of the very finest temples of French haute cuisine. Under the ownership of André and Rita Jammet, La Caravelle quickly became the place where high society dined on exquisitely prepared food of the very highest caliber with service that was always polished, meticulous and warm. Today, we are very pleased to present a portion of the restaurant's fabulous wine cellar. Although it took some coaxing on our part, we thought it to be a wonderful idea to offer these wines if not for the sheer drinking pleasure they will ultimately bring, then surely for the vinous mementos of this glorious restaurant from a bygone era they represent. The wines speak proudly for themselves, cutting a distinctive path across a broad spectrum of the wine world and, as to be expected, they have been stored under absolutely pristine conditions. We thank the Jammets for their generosity in sharing some of their stunning collection with us and we wish them well in their new and challenging journey.
