This drawing is close in type to a pair of sheets of the same size and technique in the Lehmann collection in the Metropolitan Museum of Art depicting satyrs (J. Byam Shaw, The Robert Lehman Collection, Italian Eighteenth-Century Drawings, New York, 1987, nos. 140-1). The present drawing, very pictorial, was certainly done as finished work on art.
James Byam Shaw further commented on the unusual subject of the present drawing when it was at Colnaghi in in 1965 'An excellent example of Domenico Tiepolo, in the style of the series of drawings of satyrs and centaurs, but not belonging to any of the familiar categories'.
