The Triumph of the Church: Ecclesia presented with the Doctrines, seated in a chariot attended by the Four Doctors of the Church

Associated with van Veen's painting in the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen, Bamberg (N. de Poorter, The Eucharist Series, in Corpus Rubenianum Ludwig Burchard, II, London, 1978, fig. 71). The painting is from van Veen's series of six panels entitled Fundamenta et Principia Fidei et Catholicae Religionis in Sex Triumphales Currus Dispartita, an iconographic defence of the faith which he also intended to publish as a set of engravings. The conception of the series mirrors Rubens' series of designs connected to his Triumph of the Eucharist series of tapestries, commissioned by the Archduchess Isabella in 1625 (M. Jaffé, Rubens, catalogo completo, Milan, 1989, nos. 818-861). The figure types in the present drawing, together with the complex use of iconography, can be compared to Otto van Veen's designs for illustrations to the Quinti Horatii Flacci Emblemata in the Pierpont Morgan Library, New York (F. Stampfle, Netherlandish Drawings of the Fifteenth and Sixteenth Centuries and Flemish Drawings of the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries in the Pierpont Morgan Library, New York, 1991, nos. 113-215).
