Lot Essay

Dr. Jaap Bolten has kindly suggested, on the basis of a photograph, that the present drawing may be the prime version of the drawing formerly in the van Pallandt Collection, sold at Mak van Waay, Amsterdam, 26 September 1972, lot 281. Professor Bolten notes that there are major formal differences in the staffage and proportions between the two drawings, but considers the present work to be 'infinitely more subtle'. The present sheet may have been Bloemaert's 'picture-drawing' while the van Pallandt sheet is a simpler repetition which may have been intended for the engraver. However, no print of the composition is known.
