The following eight lots form an interesting group of Cheshire chairs collected locally by Archdeacon Isaac Wood who was vicar of St Michael and All Angels, Middlewich in Cheshire from 1819 to 1864. The chairs are believed to have been collected prior to 1840 and have been housed in the church ever since. They clearly demonstrate the regional characteristics of floral carving to the back panel; also the panel itself typically is broader than other traditions and has a scrolling toprail. Also included are an unusual pair of fielded-panel chairs with elaborate foliate toprails. The chairs are mentioned in Cheshire Church Furniture, p.65 and in The Transactions of the Lancashire and Cheshire Antiquarian Society, 1970, by F.H. Crossley, vol.LV, pp.64-68, as well as in other local publications. For comparison further examples of Cheshire chairs are illustrated in Victor Chinnery, Oak Furniture, The British Tradition, Woodbridge, 1979, pp.481-485, and in the Temple Newsam House Exhibition Catalogue of Oak Furniture from Lancashire and the Lake District, published in 1973, item 21. Legal permission from the church authorities (known as a faculty) has been granted to sell the chairs as part of a redevelopment scheme at the church.
