Lot Essay
This group is from the Ludwigsburg miniature Jahrmarkt which is traditionally associated with the divertissement given for his court by Duke Carl Eugen of Würtemburg. The fair was held in the Ludwigsburg market-place every year following the Duke's visit to Venice in 1767/8. The original number of component parts appears to be unknown, but the numbers involved were substantial.
None of the figures or groups in the series appear to exist in more than four examples. The models are attributable to Jean Jacques Louis and the 'Elbs' modeller (working from 1760 to 1765). They are after designs by G.F.P. Riedel, and some appear to pre-date the first year of the fair. Cf. the Schloss Ludwigsburg exhibition catalogue Alt Ludwigsburger Porzellan (1959), no. 118 et seq.. This particular group appears to be a variant of a model sold in these Rooms on 6th October 1986, lot 120 and illustrated by Hans Dieter Flach, Ludwigsburger Porzellan (Stuttgart, 1997), p. 594, no. 758, where the man carries a pannier on his back.
