Lot Essay

The marquetry decoration on this pair of tables clearly harks back to the late 18th century, such as the work of William Moore of Dublin, who started his career working for the cabinet-makers and inlayers, Mayhew and Ince of Golden Square, London. Moore's work was to have a great influence on the work of James Hicks and Sons of Pembroke Street, Dublin in the first few decades of the 20th century (see for example lots 118-120, Cabinteely House, Co. Dublin, Christie's house sale, 5-6 November 1984 sale), and it is likely that his style was revived by other cabinet-makers in the second half of the 19th century.
