A French parcel-silvered gilt-brass and porcelain-mounted striking and repeating carriage clock with alarm in the Japanese taste
No. 200. Circa 1880
The anglaise riche case with part-fluted and part-bamboo columns and dentil cornices, with foliate cast finials to the angles, the porcelain side panels painted with the figures of a Japanese bijin and Samurai respectively, the dial with gilt Roman chapter ring, decorated with birds and branches, blued spade hands, silvered lever platform to the bimetallic balance, strike/repeat/alarm on gong to the backplate numbered 200

THE ECLECTIC MIX OF STYLES ON THIS CARRIAGE CLOCK DEMONSTRATES THE TWO-WAY TRADE IN DECORATIVE IDEAS BETWEEN EAST AND WEST AND IT WOULD BE DIFFICULT TO ASCERTAIN WHETHER IT WAS INTENDED FOR THE EUROPEAN OR JAPANESE MARKET. THE JAPONAISERIE PORCELAIN PANELS HAVE A CREAM GROUND REMINISCENT OF SHIBYAMA IVORY, WHILST THE COLUMNS OF THE CASE ARE PART CLASSICAL CORINTHIAN AND PART BAMBOO.
