Lot Essay

The present picture was originally considered to be Ubaldo Gandolfi's bozzetto for the painting of Christ and the Woman taken in Adultery in the Städtische Kunstsammlungen, Augsburg. The Augsburg picture was part of an important commission given to Gandolfi by Pier Antonio Odorici, along with its pendant, Christ and the Woman of Canaan now in Santa Maria della Misericordia, Bologna. It was exhibited as such in 1993 (M. Cazort, loc.cit.), however, opinion has remained divided about its attribution, and the discovery of another, more convincing bozzetto for the Augsburg picture (formerly with Derek Johns) means that the present picture is more likely to be by an artist working in the circle of Gandolfi.
