Lot Essay

Gillow's catalogue of 1801 shows a chair of this particular model referred to as a 'Liverpool' chair, perhaps acknowledging that this model was known to be made in the Liverpool area. It is likely that these chairs were made throughout the Lancashire/Cheshire region and a chair bearing the strike of Charles Leicester of Macclesfield, Cheshire, has been recorded. For a further discussion of this group of chairs, see Dr B Cotton, The English Regional Chair, Woodbridge, 1990, pp.355-361.
