The present picture is based on a drawing by Wtewael in the Boymans van Beunigen Museum (A.W Lowenthal, Jooachim Wtewael and Dutch Mannerism, Groningen, 1986, pl.46.). On the basis of a transperancy Dr.Anne Lowenthal feels it likely to be a copy, either of a lost original or after the above mentioned drawing, however she points out the possibility that the weakness visible in the transparency may instead be due to condition problems.
