Lot Essay

Peter Casteels III, the son of Peter Casteels I, was born in Antwerp, and probably joined his father's studio to train as an artist. He came to London in 1708 and stayed for three years, returning to Antwerp in 1712. He returned to England later in his career to work again, and he died in Richmond in 1749. His sister married Peter Tillemans (see lot 22).
He became one of twelve directors of Sir Godfrey Kneller's Academy of Painting in 1711. Soon after the death of Tillemans Casteels sold his house, The Old Bagnio in Long Acre, which his brother-in-law may have shared later his career as a studio, before he moved to Richmond.
