EARLY 20TH CENTURY, IN THE REGENCE STYLE

Although there is a reference to a chandelier in correspondence from the Myddelton family papers, it is unlikely to be this one. Dated 20 Jan 1859, the envelope is later inscribed 'History of chandelier in the Saloon'. It reads:- The chandelier you have was bought by me from St Osyth Priory. The Countess of Rochfort had chandelier made for a Room which used to be a Dining Room. I think it was George I..Thos Wharton.

However, the chandelier visible in the Saloon in the Hon. Mrs. Mary Wombwell's 1862 interior is an elaborate glass chandelier which cannot stylistically date from rather later - most probably the 19th Century. It is just possible that this chandelier, which is clearly in the George I style, may have been too small for its intended position.
