PERUGIA, Statutes -- [Silvio PASSERINI (1469-1529)]. Statuta Reuerendissimi domini Syluii Cardinalis Cortonensis Legati. Perugia: Girolamo Cartolari for the author, 27 January 1526.
4° (210 x 140mm). PRINTED ON VELLUM. Large woodcut arms of Cardinal Silvio Passerini on title, woodcut griffin of Perugia on verso, woodcut criblé initials. (Small wormtrack on title.)
BINDING: strictly contemporary Perugian blindstamped light brown morocco over pasteboard, panelled sides with saltire of Xs within ropework frame, double spine bands, two large fragments of a 13/14th-century Italian legal manuscript on vellum of the Lex Cornelia as endleaves, yellow edges (some wear and a few wormholes at spine, a little very light staining, 4 ties missing) modern green cloth folding box. PROVENANCE: Filippo Baldacchini, 31 January 1526 (title inscription).
ASSOCIATION COPY, SPECIALLY PRINTED ON VELLUM, AND OWNED BY PASSERINI'S NEPHEW. Filippo Baldacchini (fl. second half of 15th century - c.1530), praised by his uncle in the introduction, inscribed the present copy only 4 days after its publication. Author of verse and entertainments, he enjoyed ecclesiastical preferment owing to Passerini's connections to the Medici and was elected Bishop of Assisi in 1526. His ownership of the present volume so soon after publication localises the binding to Perugia. EDIT on-line, CNCE 23862.
