Part II (of 2), 2° (306 x 198mm). Greek type (text). Aldine device f4 on final verso. 48 lines and headline, paginated. (Some staining and occasional browning, marginal hole in final leaf.)
BINDING: ?Milanese binding of c. 1515; gold-tooled chestnut morocco over pasteboard, blind fillet border, central medallion composed of small tools, spine compartments diapered with blind fillets, author and title written at head of spine, remains of ?18th-century spine label, plain edges, later endpapers, missing 4 fore-edge ties (a little scuffing and surfacing worming, hinges repaired, new lower headband).
PROVENANCE: early annotations in Greek and Latin.
EDITIO PRINCEPS and one of the most important books published by the Aldine press. The flower and leaf tools closely resemble those used at Milan by various shops who bound for Jean Grolier, among others. See, for example, a 1507 Dante (De Marinis 449, pl. LXXIX; Hobson, Renaissance Book Collecting, fig. 22) and a 1516 Aldine Coelius Rhodiginus (De Marinis 450, pl. LXXX; Hobson, ibid., fig. 21; Austin 135). The tools are also not uncommon at Rome. Adams P-1436; Ahmanson-Murphy 97; Renouard, Alde, 62:4.
