A pair of scrimshaw whales teeth depicting whaling scenes**
Anonymous (American, early 20th century)
The first tooth depicts a ship portrait of the whaleship Roman and dated 1868 at the top (for the year of the ship), the other side is engraved with a whaling scene depicting a harpooned whale and a whale boat. The second tooth depicts a portrait of Capt. Jared Pernegan and dated 1868 at the top (the date depicting the captain), and on the other side is a man working at the tryworks of a whaleship. Both teeth appear to be by the same hand.
