DATED TO THE WUWU YEAR OF THE REIGN OF JIAJING, CORRESPONDING TO 1558, AND OF THE PERIOD
Each standing on an openwork base with hands clasped within the voluminous sleeves of the heavy, layered robes to support an offering, the hair drawn up into two topknots, each cast on the back of the skirt with part of a dedicatory inscription, with traces of gold lacquer and red and black pigment

Lot Essay

The inscription on the back of one figure may be read, Xiaochengli shan ren Cao Chenghuai Jiajing san shi liu nian zao and may be translated, 'Made by the charitable Cao Cheng Huai of Xiaochengli in the 36th year of the Jiajing reign'. The inscription on the other figure appears to be the names of the other donors, all from the Zhang family: Zhang Ku, Zhang de Zhou, Zhang de Cheng.
