AN UNUSUAL LARGE CHINESE DRAGON-EMBELLISHED CLOISONNE ENAMEL PEAR-SHAPED VASE

The robust body applied with nine gilt-copper five-clawed dragons pursuing a flaming pearl amidst clouds and flames reserved against a cloisonné ground of dense clouds in rich shades of blue, turquoise, red, aubergine, green, yellow, white and black reserved against a bright blue sky, above a band of white-capped waves crashing against mountains repeated on the spreading foot, all between bands of red enamel-inlaid key fret at the rims

Lot Essay

The use of large gilt-copper appliques on cloisonné enamel vessels appears to be quite rare, but two gilt-copper dragons similar to those on the present vase can be seen on a Qianlong mark and period cloisonné vase of a different form and slightly smaller size (59.5 cm. high) illustrated in Zhongguo meishu quanji; gongyi meishu, bian 10 (A Complete Collection of Chinese Art; Arts and Crafts, vol. 10; Gold, Silver, Glass and Enamelware), Beijing, 1987, p. 184, no. 332.
