JUAN MANUEL FANGIO
A rare original race-helmet worn by the five-time World Championship Grand Prix driver; brown shellac-composition hard crown, having three-piece webbing cheek and neck protection with adjustable leather straps; together with a pair of original goggles of the period. A copy of the correspondence signed from Fangio, relating to the gift of these articles, dated 1976 accompanies the lot, in which he states that they were too dirty to wear!
These two items were a personal gift from 'Il Maestro' to the Head of Public Relations of the North American Mercedes-Benz distributorship, in recognition of his association with Fangio's Mercedes-Benz distribution franchise for Argentina and South America. Juan Manuel Fangio was recognized throughout the motor racing world for his remarkable achievements through his career spanning 1947-1957, during which he won numerous races in all categories of the sport driving for Alfa Romeo, Maserati, Ferrari and Mercedes-Benz, with each of whom he won the World Drivers Championship. He was instantly recognizable behind the wheel wearing distinctive apparel such as this type of helmet and goggles.
