Lot Essay

Tischbauer was a fellow countryman of artist and designer Lucien Henry. Both had apparently been involved in the Paris Communes of 1871 and had been sent to New Caledonia as punishment before ending up in Sydney. In 1883 Tischbauer painted a large and very detailed view of George Street (Dixson Library, Sydney), but there are few other known Australian subjects by him. He worked at East Sydney Technical College before becoming a successful scenic artist in New York.
