The rectangular top pierced with a bowl aperture and now fitted with a later removable top with square baluster gallery inlaid with a brass line, above a shelf enclosing a drawer, on turned legs joined by an undertier with urn-stand, on pad feet, the handle replaced, repairs to the feet, the underside with paper label printed 'Gillows' Repository' and inscribed '77'

Lot Essay

The 'bason stand' (apart from the upper tier) corresponds to a pattern in the 1760 Estimate Sketch Book of Gillows of London and Lancaster (L. Boynton, Gillow Furniture Designs 1760-1800, Royston, 1995, fig. 111). A closely related wash-stand was sold anonymously, Christie's, London, 12 November 1998, lot 18 (£12,650).
