A SUITE OF SCOTTISH BRASS-INLAID ROSEWOOD FURNITURE This impressive suite of Drawing Room furniture is designed in the enriched 'Grecian' fashion with flowered Louis Quatorze 'boulle' arabesques. Such suites contributed to the remarkable transformation of formal Georgian Drawing Rooms into comfortable family Living Rooms in the Regency period. Gillows well represented this novel furnishing of fashionable rooms, with furniture standing around the centres and fireplaces, on the large number of room plans preserved in Lancaster and at the Victoria and Albert Museum. Like the Drawing Room furnishings of black-figured rosewood and boulle supplied around 1815 for Tatton Park, Cheshire, the present suite comprises a pair of pier card-tables, a centre- table named a 'Loo' table (after the popular card-game), and a writing-table that accompanied Grecian sofas at the fireside. Their 'obelisk' pillars are raised on reed-wrapped plinths and 'altar' pedestals whose Grecian-scrolled 'claws' terminate in festive bacchic lion-paws, while vases and palms feature in the inlaid golden tablets that accompany their floral ribboned borders.
