The rectangular cornice with simulated parquetry dentils and mutules above a black and gilt-japanned frieze decorated with foliate swags, above a pair of arched glazed panelled doors between recessed amaranth panelled uprights, enclosing a single glass shelf, above a roll-top section decorated with a garland of flowers flanked by two grisailles on the left depicting the muse of the arts of painting and on the right depicting Erato, the muse of lyric poetry, enclosing a fitted interior of pigeon-holes and drawers, with pull-out top drawer and hinged ratcheted green leather-lined writing-surface flanked by pen-trays, above three further conforming graduated drawers, between recessed amaranth panelled uprights, on conforming tapering feet, the handles replaced, the doors originally backed with silk, originally with two further glass shelves, the later lock stamped 'CHUBBS IMPROVED PATENT ST PAULS CHYD, LONDON 35500', below the Royal arms, the top drawer inscribed in ink '473', the decoration later
