Lot Essay

Between 1970-1972, Robert Mapplethorpe began working with collage, photomontage and found objects. This important corpus of early works predates his photographic work and incorporates elements of Surrealism and assemblage, with a healthy dose of erotically charged subject matter that anticipate his later photographs. Many of these early examples are in prominent private and museum collections, including the Guggenheim Museum in New York.
