An Exceptional Private Cellar - An Appreciation by Michael Broadbent
This is the sort of cellar ... , or strictly speaking, cellars - and the sort of wine I like. The owner, who I know and admire, would not regard himself as a "collector", but over many decades he has bought for drinking, never for resale, a profusion of wines of the highest quality - perhaps, even as a generous host, more than he and his guests can comfortably consume. In short, he has both a passionate interest in wine and the necessary wherewithal. It has resulted in something of a sufeit!
I can assure you that what is currently on offer is only a portion of his stock, it is an overdue thinning out, with many quite literal "bin ends". Not before time, for the last time I visited his Berkshire house the bins in one of his main cellars were obscured by cartons and boxes of wines, making it difficult to find the bottles he had selected for his frequent dinner parties.
The châteaux, the estates and the domaines represented are what old fashioned wine merchants would describe as "choice"; his particular passions, for Léoville and Langoa-Barton for example, for the best Chablis and superb Alsace, come through clearly.
All in all, an excellent opportunity to acquire mature wines of impeccable provenance
