Lot Essay

Charles Pears was primarily a marine painter in oil but he produced many posters for the LNER, GWR, LMS and The Empire Marketing Board throughout his career. In this Paignton poster we see the long sandy beach of the resort filled with happy family holidays makers. This poster was produced at a time when most workers were enjoying paid holiday for the first time and had more money to spend on leisure. A week spent in Paignton, or other British resort, was pure escapism from daily life.
