Lot Essay

In their overall design these chairs share certain characteristics with seat-furniture still at Woburn which is probably attributable to Mayhew and Ince. They may conceivably be part of suites like the '6 Mahogany Chairs, with Square backs Caned, Japan'd blue, the seats stuf'd with blue Morocco leather wetted & on Taper feet neatly turn'd 12.12.' or the '4 Neat Mahogany Chairs Moulded feet and Rails, backs & seats caned in the best manner 2 larger do with Elbows.....13.6.0', which were delivered in 1791 for Bedford House, London. Interestingly the Mayhew and Ince bed en suite with lot 171 was carved with 'Pateras to cover the screw holes'.
