Lot Essay

After the portrait in the Royal Collection (see Sir Oliver Millar, The Victorian Pictures, No.399).

The Russell's have a history of service to Queen Victoria. Anna Maria, 7th Duchess of Bedford was a Lady-in-Waiting and Elizabeth, 9th Duchess was a bridesmaid.

Sir Edwin Landseer first came to Woburn in the 1820's, and became very closely acqainted with both the Duke and Duchess, accompanying them on their annual visits to Scotland. In 1825 Landseer described the Duke as a "fine old chieftan- but very little else" (quoted by Ormond). The Duke was one of his first patrons, commissioning the Hunting of Chevy Chase ( Birmingham City Art Gallery) in 1826 as well as the 1837 silver salver exhibited at the Treasure Houses Exhibition. After the Duke's death in 1839, Landseer proposed to the Duchess, who was twenty years his senior. Her refusal led to his first nervous breakdown in 1840.
