Lot Essay

Lady Anna Maria Stanhope was the daughter of Charles Stanhope, 3rd Earl of Harrington. In 1808 she married Francis Russell, later 7th Duke of Bedford. The present picture can be dated between 1808 and 1839 when she had the courtesy title Marchioness of Tavistock.
