Gandhara, 2nd/3rd Century
Of convex form, carved in the lower register with scenes from Siddhartha's youth, riding to school on a ram, studying, competing in archery and his marriage to Yasodhara at left, the mid register with a checkerboard design, the upper register with monks in adoration of a stupa, a flame symbolizing the cremation, and the draped urn, all very finely and deeply carved

Lot Essay

This is a particularly well executed example with early scenes from Buddha's life story, including the archery contest where Siddhartha qualified himself as a worthy suitor for the hand of Yasodhara. Especially the subsequent marriage scene which is rarely depicted.
