Jogen Chowdhury's distinct style of crosshatching originated in the 1960's. He adopted the practice of pen and ink drawings, which he blended with layers of soft dry pastel in muted shades of gray and ochre. A mesh of crisscrossing lines set against a deep black background defines the resulting forms that appear suspended in the enveloping darkness.
