Appleton, 1841. 12° (192 x 115mm). Lithographed frontispiece, and 11 plates. (Some browning and spotting throughout, frontispiece and title lightly waterstained, margin of a few plates shorter.) FIRST EDITION. "The ship hunted whales in the Atlantic, rounded Cape Horn, and headed for the Hawaiian Islands. His [Olmsted's] account of that region reslulted in 'one of the wittiest pictures of Hawai created prior to the visit of Mark Twain'". The illustrations "were later hailed as the most vivid representations of whaling ever drawn" (Hill). Hill p.218; Sabin 57240.
