RICHARD POCOCKE (1704-1765)
A Description of the East and Some other Countries. London: W. Bowyer, for the author, 1743-45. 3 parts in 2 volumes, 2° (456 x 257mm). Engraved frontispiece by C. Grignion after H. Gravelot and 178 engraved plans, views and maps, some folding. (A few plates trimmed to plate mark, title lightly browned, some light surface soiling or browning.) Contemporary polished calf gilt, spine tooled in compartments (light wear, joints split, scuffing to boards, short tear to lower board, vol. I). Provenance: John Clevland (c.1707-1763), (booklabel pasted inside upper cover) -- by descent to the present owners.
FIRST EDITION. Born in Southampton, Pococke spent three years from 1737 in the Mediterranean, visiting Greece, Egypt and the Holy Land. Pococke's work, with its plates of antiquities engraved after his original drawings, was to enjoy great success within his lifetime, translated into French, German and Dutch. Its popularity was such that Edward Gibbon described it as being of 'superior learning and dignity' (Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, chap. li., note 69). Atabey 965; Blackmer 1323. (2)
