Lot Essay

Dating from c.1835-45, from the depiction of the township and its major buildings, the present view is an early example of what was to become the classic Hobart Town vista from the eastern shore painted by artists such as Glover, Bull, Gritten, von Guerard and others. David Hansen has remarked on similarities with landscape drawings by Benjamin Duterrau (H. and J. Kolenberg, Tasmanian Vision, Hobart, 1987, p.68, nos. 63-66.) and the work of William Duke (1815-1853).
