Lot Essay

Gosse issued his print in 1796 to celebrate the safe return of Bligh's second and successful breadfruit voyage on the Providence and Assistant (for which see lot 59). Bligh is depicted with the Tahitian King Tu (later Pomaré I) overseeing the loading of the breadfruit plants.
