WILLIAM CORNWALLIS HARRIS (1807-1848)
Illustrations of the Highlands of Aethiopia. London: Dickinson and Sons, [1844]. 2° (370 x 257mm). Mounted lithographic frontispiece portrait after O. Oakley, chromolithographic dedication to the Queen and 26 tinted lithographic plates after Martin Bernatz and the author. (Title thumb-soiled and restored at lower corner, some light soiling and spotting of plates, mainly at margins, some spotting of text, plate 19 with short, repaired marginal tear.) Modern blue half morocco.
A RARE SERIES OF VIEWS; ABPC does not record a copy at auction since 1979. The series was issued with coloured plates, as in the Abbey copy, or uncoloured as in this example. Harris's account of the embassy to the court of Shoa was published in three volumes by Longman in the same year, a second edition appearing in the same year as the first (see entry below). Bernatz, the artist attached to the expedition, himself brought out two volumes of views in 1852. Abbey Travel I, 291.

(Map with two long but clean tears extending from right-hand margin.) Uncut in original brown cloth (spines worn, blocks twisted, inner hinges split).
