Lot Essay

" ...the Trinidad public failed lamentably to show appreciation of gems of art -- especially where as in this latter case it was the product of one of Trinidad's sons whose work when in the zenith of his unsurpassed skill and fame as an artist, have been unearthed through the initiative of a comparative stranger, for the benefit of a worthy cause, if not for art's sake, but even for which the exhibition was got up, a better attendance should have been." (Port of Spain Gazette, 17 July 1917 quoted in G. MacLean, op. cit., p.33.)
