by Sutherland and Maile in E.E. Vidal, Picturesque Illustrations of Buenos Ayres and Monte Video, London, 1820, pl.23 ('A Quinta (Farm).' 'There are numerous quintas in every direction for two or three miles round the city, where, embowered among orange, lemon, and fig trees, and covered with vines, they afford a delicious retirement from the summer heat, which is excessive, and present a striking contrast to the arid plains just beyond them. Those which are situated on the bank of the Plata are the most agreable... The subject of the annexed plate is about a mile to the northward of the city, on the very margin of the high bank, which here approaches so near to the river, as to leave little more than the road between it and the water...')

Lot Essay

Vidal, a paymaster in the British navy, was one of the most important travelling artists working in pre- and post-independence South America. He lived for three years on the Plata and Ackermann published his Picturesque Views in 1820. There had been considerable interest in South American affairs and Buenos Aires in particular since the 'privateers' Popham and Beresford took the city in 1808. Vidal also produced fine views of Rio de Janeiro and the Brazilian seaboard when employed in various capacities on the South American Station between 1808 and 1837.
