BARON LOUIS ARMAND DE LAHONTAN (1666-1715)

New Voyages to North-America. London: J. and J. Bonwicke, R. Wilkin, S. Birt, T. Ward, E. Wicksteed, and J. Osborn [vol. I] and J. Walthoe, R. Wilkin, J. and J. Bonwicke, J. Osborn, S. Birt, T. Ward and E. Wicksteed [vol. II], 1735. 2 volumes, 8° (196 x 121mm). Engraved frontispieces and one folding engraved map, 27 engraved plates, 15 folding, 12 by Toms. Woodcut tailpieces. (Variable light spotting, one map with slight creasing and short tears at edges, one plate with short tear, one plate trimmed with minor loss, H5 and Bb8 with short tears touching text, ?lacking two plates, vide infra.) Contemporary mottled calf gilt, boards with gilt double-fillet borders, spines gilt in compartments, gilt calf lettering-pieces in two, red-speckled edges (extremities a little rubbed and chipped, cracking on spines causing superficial losses, skilfully rebacked, retaining original spines). Provenance: Sir Edward Blackett, Bart (engraved bookplates and ownership inscriptions).

Second English edition. Both Howes and Sabin call for 20 plates (despite the title-page's erroneous statement that the work is illustrated with 'Twenty-Three Maps and Cuts'); however, the present copy contains (in addition to the two frontispieces and the folding map) 27 plates, suggesting that it lacks 2 of the original plates, but has been extra-illustrated with 12 plates of ships from another work signed 'Toms' (probably the engraver William Henry Toms). The bookplates this set bears are probably those of Sir Edward Blackett, 3rd Bart, Captain R.N. (d.1756). Howes 25; Sabin 38645. (2)
