Amsterdam and Leipzig: Arkstée and Merkus, 1752. 2 volumes, 4° (253 x 205mm). 2 engraved frontispieces, titles printed in red and black with engraved vignettes, 54 engraved maps, plans and views, most folding, errata in vol. I. (Some light surface soiling or spotting, some plates lightly browned or offset, short neat tear to one plate affecting image, small wormhole to one plate.) Contemporary mottled calf gilt, spine tooled in compartments (joints split, some wear, tear to upper board of vol. II). Provenance: John Clevland (1734-1817) (shelfmarks) -- by descent to the present owners.
FIRST EDITION IN FRENCH. Ulloa and Juan were attached to a French expedition organised by the Académie des Sciences to South America, as 'two of the most scientific' (Sabin) officers of the Spanish navy. After long and varied journeys, the two were back in Spain by 1746 and began to compile the present work, Juan taking charge of the scientific observations and Ulloa the historical aspect of the expedition. It was first published in Madrid in 1748--misleadingly, some copies of the French edition bore a Parisian imprint. Sabin 36812; Palau 125473; Howgego U3. (2)
