MARQUIS JOSEPH BERNARD DE CHABERT (1724-1805)
Voyage Fait par Ordre du Roi en 1750 et 1751, Dans l'Amérique Septentrionale. Paris: L'Imprimerie Royale, 1753. 4° (253 x 197mm). Engraved publisher's device to title, engraved headpiece by L. D. Gobin after de Flote St. Joseph, 6 engraved folding charts by Dheulland after Chabert and folding astrological table, printed folding table. (Light creasing and some browning along folds of first map, some very light marginal browning or offsetting.) Contemporary calf gilt, spine tooled in compartments (upper joint split, light wear to extremities, head and foot of spine chipped). Provenance: John Clevland (1734-1817), (armorial bookplate pasted inside upper cover) -- by descent to the present owners.
FIRST EDITION. Although only twenty-nine in 1753, Chabert had already received official recognition for his work in rectifying the previously incorrect longitude of Buenos Ayres. Chabert set sail from Brest in 1750, and spent a year surveying the coasts of Nova Scotia and Cape Breton Island, having established his astronomical instruments in the governor of Louisburg's garden. The work was highly praised by the French Academy of Science, and upheld as a model to future navigators. Sabin 11723; Howgego C87.
