CHALLENGER EXPEDITION, 1886-1895
[Dr James Chumley (1861-1948)]. A collection of approximately 48 letters addressed to Chumley, the majority 1918, reacting to the publication of his The Fauna of the Clyde Sea Area; also a commemorative medal, inscribed on recto 'Voyage of H.M.S. Challenger, 1872-76', and on verso 'Report on the scientific results of the Challenger Expedition, 1886-95'; and a photograph of Chumley; with copies, inscribed by the author, of three works by Chumley on oceanographic subjects; and related printed ephemera, together with Chumley's burr walnut writing cabinet
Chumley was a key figure, closely associated with Sir John Murray (1841-1914), in the Challenger office, based in Edinburgh, which, over a period of twenty years, worked out the scientific conclusions of the Challenger's pioneering oceanographic voyage around the world.
