Lot Essay

An important album of Hurley's prints from the collection of the expedition meteorologist Leonard Hussey. This is the rare de-luxe edition of Hurley's prints, this example apparently an unique variant including prints in various colours printed on the album leaves. There are two otherwise similar albums of 78 and 79 prints in the collection of Dulwich College (for which see J.Piggott (ed.), Shackleton The Antarctic and Endurance, Dulwich, 2000, p.129), another was presented to Shackleton's key sponsor Janet Stancomb Wills (Christie's, 25 Sept. 2002, lot 363) and another is recorded in The Royal Collection ('Five albums are reputed to have been made. Hurley took one in a taxi to Buckingham Palace.' (J.Piggott, op. cit.)
