These autographs are probably the earliest examples of The Beatles' signatures to have appeared at auction.
At this time, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Stuart Sutcliffe were calling themselves The Silver Beatles, so it is interesting to note that Paul has simply signed The Beatles. On this, their first tour of Scotland they were backing Johnny Gentle, and before setting off, they adopted stage names - Paul McCartney named himself Paul Ramon, George became Carl Harrison, named after his idol Carl Perkins, and Stuart Sutcliffe changed his name to De Stael after the Russian artist, Nicholas De Stael.
On 23rd May, Johnny Gentle crashed into a car outside the vendor's house near Banff, Scotland, who recalls the incident very clearly. She remembers John Lennon asking her where the nearest chip shop was, but she persuaded him to stay at the scene until the police arrived. Lennon's response was to ask her mother if the vendor and her friend could go on his behalf. Lennon didn't have enough money and the vendor recalls that it was George Harrison who came up with the shortfall. The vendor went off to buy chips for all the musicians and on her return, Lennon told her to keep the change. The "Margie" who has signed one of these pieces of paper was Marjorie Overall, Johnny Gentle's girlfriend at the time - the vendor remembers her striking peroxide/mauve hair and that she was wearing matching tight mauve trousers, an unusual look in Scotland in 1960.
