The well-carved lion with mouth open in a roar exposing the tongue and fangs, with eyes staring fiercly below the furrowed brows and with ears laid back above the mane, with satiny patina and some earth adhesions
3¾ in. (9.5 cm.) long, pink granite pedestal

A similar limestone head of a lion dated to the Tang dynasty is illustrated in Mostra d'Arte Cinese, Venice, 1954, p. 80, no. 260.
