Lot Essay
Richard William Hubbard produced exquisitely refined paintings of nineteenth century landscapes depicting New England and upstate New York, Lake George in particular. A native of Connecticut, Hubbard studied painting in New York with Samuel F.B. Morse and possibly Daniel Huntington. Hubbard exhibited for over forty years at the National Academy of Design, the Brooklyn Art Association and the American Art Union.
A close friend of Sanford Robinson Gifford, Hubbard shared the Luminist artist's preoccupation with light, atmosphere and attention to detail. In the present work, Hubbard explores with equal insight the foreground's detail and the tangible panorama of the distant landscape. The fishing boat which leisurely drifts on the calm surface of the lake reaffirms the sublime presence of nature, characteristic of the Luminist philosophies regarding religion and nature.
