Lot Essay

A Baltimore, Maryland native, Edward Berge is best known for his bronze monumental works. Berge studied at the Maryland Institute and the Rinehart School in Baltimore, Maryland, then continued sudying in Paris under August Rodin and at the Academie Julien. Berge's work was met with critical acclaim throughout his career--the artist received awards at the Pan-American Exposition, Buffalo, New York in 1901, the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, St. Louis, Missouri in 1904, the Santiago Exposition, Chile in 1910, the Panama Pacific International Exposition, San Francisco, California in 1915, and the Allied Artists of America, Paris (n.d.).
